Could Better Gut Health Be One of the Most Overlooked Ways to Reduce Colic Risk?

By Dr Chris Mortensen, PhD Equine Physiologist

Colic is one of the biggest health concerns for horse owners, but it isn't a single disease. It is a term used to describe pain in the digestive system and can have many causes, including feeding practices, forage quality, dehydration, parasites, dental problems, stress, exercise, and poor gut health.

While no supplement can prevent colic, supporting digestive health is one thing horse owners can do every day to help reduce digestive challenges. A healthy digestive system helps horses digest fibre, supports a healthy balance of beneficial gut microbes, keeps the digestive tract working normally, and helps maintain a strong gut lining.

Did you know? More than 70% of a horse's digestive tract is the hind gut, where billions of beneficial microbes break down fibre to produce energy and support digestive health. When this balance is disrupted, the risk of digestive upset may increase.

Did you know? Many common risk factors for colic are related to everyday management. Sudden feed changes, low water intake, poor forage quality, stress, and digestive disturbances can all increase a horse's risk.
